Finding Faith in the Fog…

(Please enjoy this anonymous story, which I find uplifting).

Finding Faith in the Fog…

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)

I had just left an encouraging Christian conference full of hope, full of direction, and the courage to get things done. The upbeat praise and worship music streamed from the car speakers into my heart, and I loudly sang along in a carefree manner. Suddenly, though, my singing stopped and my fingers white-knuckled the steering wheel. As I rounded a corner and turned directly into a dense fog, reality snapped me to attention! The fog was so dense it shielded the mountainous landscape like a thick blanket. I had driven this familiar stretch of road a hundred times before, and I knew it by heart. But at that moment, my heart was panicky and my confidence in my driving abilities had immediately plummeted! My eyes strained to see past the hood of my car and even though I knew the white lines on the two-lane road were there, I could not see them. All I could do was cry out to God in desperation, “God, I am scared! Please guide me. Right now, I can see nothing. Please show me the way.” I was so scared, but I had to keep driving.

As my car inched along, I reflected on the uplifting conference where I had been for the last three days. God had called me there to serve Him, and I had to have faith that he would get me home safe, even through this intense weather. For the rest of the drive, I repeated a calmer prayer, “God, help me to keep going and trust that you will guide me to safety.” About an hour later, I exited off the twisting, mountainous road and into the driveway of my destination. As I reached in the dark for my car door’s handle, my hands shook, and I stepped out of the car onto solid ground. I exhaled… I don’t think I had taken a full breath since I had hit the fog. So, I deeply inhaled that thick mountain air and made my way, with shaky legs, to the front door of the house. Once inside, I fell to my knees in thanks for the miracle God had just given me. It was only then that I realized I had just lived a message: “Foggy nights” can produce a deeper faith.

Since then, I have hit other “patches of fog” in my life journey. Usually, the doubt comes soon after a deeply meaningful time when I have felt God’s presence and have seen, clearly, His purpose for me. It is then that my faith is tested. Our key verse reminds me that true faith is finding certainty in uncertain territory. “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1) This chapter, Hebrews 11, is often referred to as the Bible’s “Hall of Faith.” I love reading all the different stories of extraordinary faith goers, from Abel, to Abraham, to Rahab the prostitute. Each “Hall of Faith Honoree” demonstrated great faith in the foggy times of life.

Have faith that God is with you, whatever circumstances you find yourself in today. Whether you’ve just celebrated an uplifting experience or struggled blindly through the foggiest night of your life, know that God is the same on a sunny, clear day as he is on a foggy, dark night. May we be encouraged to find and strengthen our faith, no matter where our road may lead us.

Celebrate Your Faith

We’ve found many customers carry a Milestone Coin as a constant reminder that their God is with them. You might like the bold design of the Crescent Moon Cross coin. Or the simple statement of the Liberty Series Sacred Cross coin might appeal. The Calvary Tri-Cross coin and the Secret Symbol coin are ancient symbols of the Christian faith.

People in recovery might appreciate a symbol of faith paired with the familiar AA Circle and Triangle. Coins like our Legacy Coin with Faith, our Kennedy – In God We Trust coin, and our Etched AA with Cut-Through Cross coin do just that.

But not everyone is Christian. Check out our Copper Star of David coin. Or the simple statement of the Prayer Man coin.
