The Three Legacies of Alcoholics Anonymous

The Legacy Coin

What are the Three Legacies of Alcoholics Anonymous and what do they represent?

The Three Legacies of Alcoholics Anonymous are RECOVERY, UNITY, and SERVICE. These legacies have been passed down to us from the founders, co-founders, and old-timers of AA.

1) Recovery is contained in the Big Book and Twelve Steps.
2) Unity is contained in the Twelve Traditions.
3) Service is contained in every act which helps AA function or which carries the AA message to those who need it.

The Twelve Steps guide our actions in recovery as individuals. The Twelve Traditions guide our actions as a group. And the Twelve Concepts for World Service guide our actions as an assembly in service.

An AA Founder’s Perspective

Bill W. stated that the Three Legacies, “In a sense represent three impossibilities, impossibilities that we know became possible, and possibilities that have now borne this unbelievable fruit.” He went on to share the following, “… Old Fitzmayo, one of the early AA’s and I visited the Surgeon General of the United States in the third year of this society and told him of our beginnings. He was a gentleman, Dr. Lawrence Kolb, and has since become a great friend of AA. He said, ‘I wish you well. Even the sobriety of a few is a miracle. The government knows that this is one of the greatest health problems but we have considered the recovery of alcoholics so impossible that we have given up and have instead concluded that rehabilitation of narcotic addicts would be the easier job to tackle.’ Such was the devastating impossibility of our situation.”

“Now, what has been brought to bear upon this impossibility that it has become possible? First, the grace of Him who presides over all of us. Second, the cruel lash of John Barleycorn who said, “this you must do, or die!” And finally the intervention of our Higher Power through friends, who were at first a few and were now a legion!”

It is out of experience in living and working together that came the need to apply the spirit of the Twelve Steps to the steps of our lives. These were the forces that generated the Twelve Traditions of AA and out of this sprang a sense and action of Service to keep a united front.

Celebrate the Three Legacies

MilestoneCoins loves the Three Legacies and celebrates them with our Legacy Coins. Our Circle and Triangle Legacy Coin carries the word “LIBERTY” around the circle, anchored with your special year along the bottom. Our Legacy Coin with Faith Coin adds a Christian Cross. Our Unity, Service, and Recovery Coin leaves the center of the triangle solid, for those that like a simpler look.

The Franklin Series ‘In God We Trust’ coin is another beautiful Legacy Coin. But with the Franklin Legacy Coin, the year appears on the Service leg of the triangle, and the words, ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ serve as the foundation across the bottom of the coin.

  2. A decade ago I saw the Milestone coins. I was more interested in acknowledging when I started my journey and my commitment than how many months or years I had or would achieve. In reflection I remember when when I began, one day at a time, never looking to the far away dates to become an old timer. My Milestones coins (and I have many styles and stories for each one of them) all celebrate my year of making the decision to be “Happy Joyous and Free”. The year I stopped the insanity will never change. The coins are my forever commitment. I thank the thoughtful man and his commitment to all of us who once suffered. I love this web sight and the positive heirlooms I have. Once I met a person at the San Antonio Int’l AA Convention in 2010 who said no one had a coin for their sobriety. I asked when she had her last drink, the response was 30 minutes ago. I told her this Milestone coin with the year 2010 on it starts your sobriety right now and doesn’t have to change ever!. She smiled and received the coin. That was on July 4th, 2010. Exactly one year later I received an email that it had been a year year since her last drink and her coin was ever with her as a reminder of the start of a beautiful journey. Thanks, Rick for Milestone Coins…
